  • How to end breastfeeding gently

Saying goodbye to breastfeeding is a difficult but important stage in the life of mom and baby. Emotionally, it can be difficult for both parties: the baby loses a source of comfort and affection, and the mom loses a significant part of her daily care. To make this process more comfortable, it is important to approach it with preparation and patience.

First of all, it is worth choosing the right time. Try not to start weaning when the baby is sick, stressed, getting used to new conditions or needs special care. It is better if there are no other drastic changes in the baby's life for this period. It is also important that the mother herself was morally ready: weaning requires patience and consistency.

Wean gradually. Start by replacing one feeding with a bottle or sippy cup with formula or milk. After a few days, replace one more feeding. Most often the last feedings before bedtime and at night are the most emotionally significant for the baby. Gradual reduction in the frequency of laying allows and the baby to get used to it, and the mother to avoid painful breast engorgement.

If you have always fed in the same place, it is worth changing the environment. For example, offer the new food not in the chair where the feeding usually took place, but in the highchair or at the communal table. This will reduce the baby's association and emotional dependence on the breast. It is important to replace not only milk, but also the very moment of closeness - cuddle more often, play, read books on your lap, be close by.

For older babies, you can use conversation. Explain to the child that he has become an adult, and now will eat like mom and dad. Tell him that breast milk is food for babies, and he's all grown up now. Do this gently but firmly, emphasizing that you are always there for him and love him.

Finally, take care of your health. If your breasts overflow, use cabbage compresses, drink sage infusion, gently decant just a little to avoid stagnation. If there is a lot of milk, consult a doctor - he can prescribe a drug to end lactation. But try to avoid drastic measures: gradualness and attention to your own body - the key to the successful completion of breastfeeding.
