  • Prime Ministers of Hungary and Slovakia expressed dissatisfaction with the increase in EU financial assistance to Ukraine

At a meeting of European Union leaders held on October 26 in Brussels, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed his disagreement with the allocation of a €50 billion tranche of financial aid to Ukraine. His words were echoed by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who cited corruption issues in expressing caution about providing new financial support to Ukraine, Reuters reports.

It is noted that both politicians expressed their positions during a meeting of European Union leaders.

Viktor Orban expressed doubts about increasing aid to Ukraine, arguing that Hungary would not support this step unless a "very reasonable proposal is presented."

It is worth noting that Viktor Orban's comments were made at a time when Budapest is trying to get the aid that is provided for Hungary in the EU budget, but blocked by the European Commission due to problems with the rule of law in Hungary.

For his part, Robert Fico said that Bratislava would no longer support Ukraine in defense and military matters.

"We will focus exclusively on humanitarian aid," - he wrote from Brussels.

Two European Union diplomats with knowledge of the leaders' private discussions said Robert Fico pointed to corruption issues and expressed reservations about allocating new resources to Ukraine.

Other Eastern European countries expressed their disapproval of such positions. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said that the proposed 50 billion euros for Ukraine is not enough. At the same time, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas believes that, in addition to supporting Ukraine, the overall spending of the EU countries should increase to strengthen the bloc's defense capabilities.
