German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a large-scale expansion of military aid to Ukraine, focusing on financing Ukrainian long-range weapon systems. This is a new phase of support that involves not only the supply of weapons, but also the development of Ukraine’s defense potential through direct investment in production.
“Without going into details, I can confirm: we are significantly increasing our military aid. This is critically important for Ukraine to be able to effectively defend itself against Russian aggression — both now and in the long term,” Merz said during his speech, pointing to the strategic nature of the support.
Of particular note is the announcement of the signing of an agreement between the defense ministers of Germany and Ukraine on the purchase of Ukrainian long-range missile systems. The Chancellor emphasized that these systems will have no limitations on the range of targets, which gives the Armed Forces of Ukraine a significant boost in countering threats throughout the entire depth of the front.
The German government will also bear a significant part of the costs of providing satellite communications, in particular with the help of the Starlink system. This will ensure the critical stability of communications on the battlefield, which often becomes the object of cyberattacks and electronic warfare from Russia.
Earlier, Friedrich Merz emphasized that the negotiations on a ceasefire in Ukraine are only at the initial stage. In his opinion, even if the diplomatic process is successfully launched, it could last many weeks or months. That is why, according to the Chancellor, Germany is not reducing the pace of support — both military and political.
This step by Berlin is a weighty signal both for NATO partners and for Ukraine itself — evidence of a strategic change in the approach to assistance. This is not only about short-term support in the war, but also about laying the foundations for the long-term security and technological independence of the Ukrainian defense complex.
