  • European Commission proposes to extend temporary protection status for Ukrainians

    Опубликовано: 2023-09-20 18:00:28

The European Commission has submitted a proposal to extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainians who fled Ukraine due to the war until March 2025. This initiative helps to provide rights and support to more than four million Ukrainians seeking asylum in the European Union due to the military conflict provoked by Russia. This was reported by the European Commission on its official website.

The essence of the initiative is to extend the temporary protection status for Ukrainian citizens, which will allow them to enjoy rights and benefits in the EU, including the right to reside, work, housing, social assistance, medical and other support.

This initiative was activated by the European Union on March 4, 2022, when the EU member states decided to grant temporary protection to Ukrainians. The temporary protection was automatically extended for a year. In August 2023, Ukraine managed to reach an agreement with the EU to extend the temporary protection period until March 4, 2024.

The European Commission's proposal to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians must be approved by the EU Council. This decision is important for more than four million Ukrainians who are in the European Union and need international protection.

The Temporary Protection Directive also helps to prevent an excessive burden on national refugee reception and service systems.

The European Commission emphasizes that the reasons for the extension of temporary protection remain valid, and this decision is in line with the current situation.

According to Eurostat, as of July 31, 2023, more than 4.1 million people who fled Ukraine after the Russian invasion had temporary protection status in EU countries. This decision will help to provide them with the necessary support and protection in the context of the conflict.

This European decision demonstrates the European Union's solidarity with Ukraine and support for Ukrainian citizens who have become victims of war.

Through this initiative, the European Union continues to fulfill its commitment to provide protection and rights for refugees and those persecuted by conflict and violence.
