On August 24 this year, the United States of America announced the introduction of new sanctions against individuals involved in the deportation of Ukrainian children from the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to Russia. This information was made public by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak.
According to Yermak, the sanctions are applied to persons who participated in the forced transfer of Ukrainian children to so-called "summer camps" in Russia and in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine. Here, children were subjected to indoctrination through propaganda.
In addition, sanctions will also be imposed on individuals who create pro-Russian educational programs in the regions of Ukraine occupied by the Russian authorities.
Among the individuals and organizations that have been sanctioned:
Artek International Children's Center.
Vladimir Kovalenko - Chief of Staff of the All-Russian Children's and Youth Patriotic Public Movement "Yunarmiya".
Galina Pyatikh - Advisor to the Governor of the Belgorod Region, Ombudsman for Children's Rights in the Belgorod Region.
Irina Ageeva - Ombudsman for Children's Rights in the Kaluga Region of the Russian Federation.
Irina Cherkasova - Children's Rights Ombudsman in Rostov.
Mansur Soltaev - Human Rights Ombudsman in the Chechen Republic.
Elena Shapurova - Russian-appointed so-called "Minister of Education and Science" in the Russian-controlled areas of Zaporizhzhia region in Ukraine.
Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation.
This is not the first time the United States and Canada have imposed sanctions on individuals and organizations involved in the annexation of Crimea and the war in eastern Ukraine. For example, in July 2023, the Council of the European Union imposed restrictions on seven Russian individuals and five organizations that were responsible for a campaign of digital information manipulation and propaganda in support of Russia's war against Ukraine.
