  • Up to what age is breast milk beneficial

    Опубликовано: 2025-05-23 15:28:37

Breastfeeding is not only a source of nutrition for the baby, but also a way to maintain his health. Mother's milk in the first months of life is truly unique: it is perfectly balanced for a small organism and has everything necessary for growth and development. However, many parents wonder up to what age it is worth continuing to breastfeed. Let's consider what benefits long-term breastfeeding has and how it affects the health of the baby.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends breastfeeding a baby for at least two years. This opinion is supported by numerous studies that have proven that milk continues to be beneficial even after one year. It is important to note that if both mother and child are not ready to stop breastfeeding, then WHO claims that it can continue up to three years and even longer.

One of the most important aspects of long-term breastfeeding is its effect on the baby's immune system. The longer a mother breastfeeds, the more antibodies are contained in her milk. This helps the baby to protect itself from viral and bacterial infections. A grown child still needs this protection, as its immune system has not yet reached maturity. Mother's milk supports its body, preventing diseases or mitigating their course.

In addition, long-term breastfeeding promotes the proper development of the gastrointestinal tract. During feeding, the child receives not only nutrients, but also enzymes that help its body produce its own substances for digesting food. This is especially important at the age of 1-2 years, when the first complementary foods begin and the gastrointestinal system is just beginning to adapt to adult food.

No less significant is the effect of long-term breastfeeding on the development of the nervous system and brain. During the first three years of life, the baby is actively developing its brain, and breast milk plays an important role in this process, providing it with the necessary amino acids and microelements. Research shows that children who have been breastfed for more than two years have better cognitive abilities and higher intelligence in the future.

We should not forget about the importance of breast milk for the formation of a psycho-emotional connection between mother and child. Feeding is not only physical satiety, but also a moment of closeness that strengthens trust and affection. A baby who continues to breastfeed feels support and security, which affects his self-confidence and social adaptation.

Thus, breast milk remains useful for the baby well beyond the first year of life. It continues to support his immunity, helps in the development of the digestive system, and also plays an important role in cognitive and emotional development. Even if the child is over two years old, breastfeeding remains a valuable tool in his healthy growth and development.
