Microsoft is taking a decisive step towards abandoning passwords, which for decades have remained the main means of protecting digital accounts. Now the company is setting a new standard: all new Microsoft accounts will be created without a password, and users will be offered more reliable and modern alternatives - including push notifications and security keys.
The Verge reports on the innovation, noting that this is one of the company's most ambitious steps towards a password-free future. New users will no longer be able to set a familiar password during registration, and instead will choose one of the login options based on multi-factor authentication or cryptographic keys.
The update also affected the login window: Microsoft introduced a new interface, which changed the order of actions and emphasized the use of access keys. Thanks to the new design, users get a more convenient and secure experience without having to remember complex passwords.
For existing accounts, the company is offering the option to completely remove the password. Users can go to account settings and manually delete the password by activating one of the passwordless sign-in options. In this way, Microsoft is gradually creating an ecosystem in which passwords are becoming a thing of the past.
The company is also actively introducing access keys (passkeys) as the main method of securing accounts. According to Microsoft, today users create almost a million of such keys every day. Moreover, the success rate of sign-in with a passkey reaches 98%, while for accounts with traditional passwords this figure is only 32%.
Microsoft is expected to further expand support for new sign-in methods across all its platforms over the next year. The move to passwordless protection corresponds to the general trend in the cybersecurity industry - the rejection of vulnerable and insecure methods and their replacement with modern, cryptographically protected solutions.
