  • After lengthy negotiations, Polish authorities did not reach a full compromise with protesting farmers

After lengthy negotiations, the Polish authorities did not reach a full compromise with the protesting farmers, but instead forced an agreement on subsidies per ton of grain and a temporary suspension of the transit of certain agricultural products across the Polish-Ukrainian border.

This was reported by Polish Radio.

The agreement was signed by representatives of the protesting farmers, Minister of Agriculture Czeslaw Siekerski and Deputy Minister Michal Kolodziejczak. According to the agreement, the ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine, such as wheat, corn, wheat flour, rapeseed, and sunflower, which has been in effect since September 2022, will be extended.

Thus, the Polish government made concessions to farmers, but did not fully address their demands, reaching only a temporary compromise on subsidies and the extension of restrictions on imports from Ukraine.

Additionally, the Minister of Agriculture is to address the Council of Ministers with a request to suspend the transit of these products through Poland from April 1 this year.

In the signed document, the parties also consider it necessary to develop detailed rules for trade in agri-food products between Poland and Ukraine, but also emphasize that the difficult situation in agriculture is the result of Russia's aggression against Kyiv.
