A Ukrainian cyber warfare group operating under the auspices of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine has successfully conducted a large-scale cyber attack on the Russian tax system, devastatingly affecting the infrastructure and functioning of this key government agency.
The DIU press service reports that as part of this special operation, the Ukrainian military managed to penetrate the well-protected servers of the Russian Federal Tax Service, as well as more than 2,300 regional servers covering the whole of Russia and the annexed Crimea.
The result of the attack was the actual destruction of the database and its backups, which ensured the operation of the extensive tax system of the Russian Federation. The intelligence emphasizes that the configuration files that ensured the functioning of the system were completely eliminated.
As a result of this cyberattack, the connection between the central office in Moscow and thousands of regional offices was cut off, leading to the paralyzation of the Russian tax system throughout the country.
Experts believe that the federal tax service of the Russian Federation will be paralyzed for at least a month, which is recognized as a serious blow to the regime in the Kremlin. This act of cyberwarfare has led to a temporary loss of control over taxes and fees by Russia, destroying a key element of its state apparatus.
