  • Ukraine prepares for negotiations with the United States on subsoil use: international law firm involved in the case

Ukraine has taken a strategic step towards protecting its economic interests by hiring an international law firm to participate in negotiations with the United States on a future agreement on the use of minerals. Technical consultations are scheduled for April 11-12 in Washington, and the Ukrainian side will be represented by a delegation at the level of deputy ministers.

According to Bloomberg, citing sources, the Ukrainian delegation will include representatives of the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Justice. The absence of senior officials is explained by the technical nature of the discussions at this stage. The main goal is to develop a negotiating position on the terms of a potential agreement with the administration of President Donald Trump.

To strengthen its position in the negotiations, Ukraine has hired an international law firm to advise the Ukrainian side on the legal aspects of the agreement. This step is designed to ensure maximum professionalism and protection of the state's interests in a complex negotiation process that has far-reaching economic consequences.

According to Bloomberg, this is an agreement that may provide for the transfer of up to 50% of future revenues from the extraction of Ukrainian minerals to the United States as compensation for the multi-billion dollar financial assistance provided by Washington after the start of a full-scale war with Russia. In particular, the Trump administration sees this as a tool to reimburse the costs incurred by the Joe Biden government.

The Ukrainian side is aimed at finding more favorable conditions for itself. As noted by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy Yulia Svyridenko, a technical group is currently being created to prepare the negotiations, and principled positions and "red lines" that Ukraine does not intend to cross are being formulated.

Svyridenko also emphasized that the document currently under discussion was prepared by the legal department of the US Treasury Department and does not reflect the joint agreed position of the parties. “This is not the final version,” she emphasized, pointing to the need for further consultations and agreements.
