The most frequently stolen cars in Ukraine: what you should know

Since the beginning of 2024, 765 cases of car theft have been recorded in Ukraine, which is confirmed by the statistics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Nissan, VAZ and Volkswagen are the most common stolen cars. Crimes related to car theft are most often registered in the Donetsk and Kherson regions, which makes these regions the most problematic in this respect.

According to analysts, the peak of car thefts occurred at the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine, but currently the situation with thefts is beginning to stabilize. Compared to last year, the number of kidnappings decreased significantly: in 2023, almost twice as many crimes were recorded — 1,200 kidnappings. This indicator indicates positive changes in the fight against crime in the motor transport market.

In total, 15,274 cases of car theft were registered in Ukraine during the three years of the war. The largest number of thefts is observed in Donetsk region, where 256 cases were recorded, and Kherson region — 166 cases. Together, these regions account for about 55% of total hijackings in 2024.

This year, the Volyn region took third place with 104 thefts, which is 13.6% of the total. Last year, Dnipropetrovsk Region was in third place with 137 cases. It is worth noting that the situation in this region has improved, because it has risen two positions in the anti-rating.

According to statistics, passenger cars are the most stolen vehicles: 516 vehicles or 67.5% of the total number of thefts in 2024. Also, 98 cases of theft of trucks and 42 motorcycles were recorded. Last year, trailers were also popular — 113 cases.

During the Great War, VAZ cars (models 2107 and 21063) were the most stolen - 2.4 thousand cases, GAZ - 1 thousand and Renault - 750 (mainly Duster models). In 2024, Nissan cars took first place among thefts — 61 cases (8% of the total). VAZ and Volkswagen are also in the top three with 57 (7.5%) and 53 (6.9%) thefts respectively.

We will remind that since the beginning of the year almost 2,000 fatal traffic accidents occurred in Ukraine, and about 21,000 people were injured. Most of the accidents happened in Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and Odesa Oblast. M-06 Kyiv — Chop and M-30 Stryi — Uman — Dnipro — Izvarine remain the most dangerous highways in terms of the number of road accidents.
