  • Bad mood in women: cultural influence or medical reality?

    Опубликовано: 2023-12-27 08:48:00

According to research by British scientists, depression and some other mental conditions may be the result of cultural influences rather than a purely medical phenomenon. Prof. Christopher Dovrik states that depression, as a consequence, is related to belonging to the Western culture, where the cult of happiness is developed and deviation from it is considered as a disease.

The scientist emphasizes that psychiatrists have no consensus on the symptoms of depression and points out that in countries such as China or India, this diagnosis is established much less frequently. These findings cast doubt on whether depression is solely a medical phenomenon.

A similar point of view was also expressed by Prof. Thomas S. Johnson, who attributed premenstrual tension syndrome (PMS) to the cultural heritage of the Western world. The studies also refuted the notion that bad mood in women is closely related to physiological changes before menstruation.

In conclusion, these scientific theories emphasize the importance of understanding the influence of cultural factors on mental health.

Consequently, it is worth considering the extent to which our attitudes towards illness and mood are shaped by cultural stereotypes, and how this influences societal perceptions and well-being.
