In the first 8 months of 2023, China gained an imperial position in the Russian automotive import market, taking 92% of the total volume. This conclusion was made by the interim head of the Federal Customs Service of the Russian Federation, Ruslan Davydov, according to The Moscow Times.
Davydov noted that trade between Russia and China has "increased dramatically," while the share of the European Union in Russia's total trade continues to fall.
In the first 6 months of 2023, the volume of passenger car exports from China to Russia amounted to $4.6 billion, up 543% year-on-year.
After the conflict in Ukraine broke out, all major global automakers suspended production in Russia. Many of them subsequently sold their assets and left the country. In addition, official deliveries of new cars have stopped.
It is worth noting that the Russian car market has undergone significant changes amid geopolitical events and sanctions policy. China has become the dominant supplier, surpassing the European Union and other importers, and has established a strong position in the automotive import sector in the Russian market.
