On January 15, the 60th prisoner exchange took place, as a result of which 25 Ukrainian citizens, including military personnel and civilians, returned home. This was a significant event in the process of returning our people who were in captivity due to Russian aggression.
This important news was announced by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, emphasizing that the exchange of prisoners remains one of the main directions of the state's work. Among the released are defenders of Mariupol and Azovstal, as well as servicemen from various regions of Ukraine, in particular, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions. Representatives of the National Guard, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Naval Forces and the State Border Guard Service returned from captivity. The list of those released also includes servicemen from Kursk.
The President noted that Ukraine managed to achieve this result thanks to constant work on returning its people home. "We will not stop until we return all our people," he wrote in his address. Zelensky also thanked the team involved in the search and organization of the prisoner exchange, as well as the United Arab Emirates for their assistance in implementing this exchange.
The Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported that among the released people there are people of different ages - the youngest of them is only 24 years old, and the oldest is 60. Many of these people experienced extremely difficult conditions in captivity, where they did not receive proper medical care and were subjected to cruel treatment by the enemy.
The released Ukrainians have serious physical and psychological injuries that they received during their captivity. Among the most common injuries are loss of vision, amputations of limbs, bullet wounds and the consequences of mine and explosive injuries. In addition, among the diseases that affected the released are tuberculosis, cancer and gangrene.
This exchange is another step towards ensuring that every citizen of Ukraine who was captured can return home. The authorities promise to continue working towards the return of all our people, supporting them on their path to recovery and rehabilitation.
