  • Will Zelensky sign the law on tax increases? The decision has not yet been made

    Опубликовано: 2024-11-18 10:00:36

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has not yet decided whether to sign draft law No. 11416-d, which provides for an increase in tax rates, in particular, a new amount of military levy. The situation surrounding this document remains uncertain, despite significant public outcry.

As BVS-Ukraine reports with reference to a source in the President's Office, the deadlines for both signing and vetoing the draft law have already passed. The law was supposed to take effect retroactively from October 1, but has not yet come into effect.

The proposal to increase taxes caused a wave of criticism from businesses, citizens and even some people's deputies. In particular, the guarantees that all additional funds from the military levy will be directed to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are being questioned. Instead, there are calls to pay attention to the fight against the shadow economy, which, according to experts, is a significant source of potential revenues for the budget.

Some analysts assume that Zelensky is counting on financial assistance from the European Union at the expense of confiscated Russian assets. This may be the reason for his delay in signing the law, because new tax initiatives may prove unpopular among the population.

At the same time, according to the media, the president has been holding back from making a decision for more than three weeks because of new initiatives by the head of the tax committee, Danylo Hetmantsev. Hetmantsev's proposals to raise taxes are causing debate among government officials and experts.

Danylo Hetmantsev himself, however, is sure that the president will sign the draft law No. 11416-d. In his opinion, increasing tax revenues is a necessary step to maintain economic stability and ensure financing of critical state needs. As for Zelensky's final decision, the country remains waiting.
