  • Kyiv's Trukhaniv and Venetsiansky islands have received full protection status

    Опубликовано: 2024-10-02 10:00:16

In September of this year, the Supreme Court of Ukraine confirmed the cancellation of the establishment of water protection zones and coastal protective strips up to 100 meters on the islands of Trukhaniv and Venetsianskyi in the city of Kyiv. This decision, which has already been implemented, was duly supported by the Commercial Court of Kyiv and the Northern Commercial Court of Appeal, considering the lawsuit of the Specialized Environmental Prosecutor's Office.

The court decision is based on the arguments presented by the prosecutor's office that according to the current legislation, the entire territory of the Trukhaniv and Venetsiansky islands should be under a special protection regime. The establishment of an artificial water protection zone and protective strips threatened the possibility of construction in these territories, violating environmental regulations.

The Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine indicates that with the removal of relevant records from the State Land Cadastre, the entire territory of both islands is now recognized as a coastal protective strip with restrictions on economic activity.

Venetsianskyi and Trukhaniv are the largest islands on the Dnieper in Kyiv, popular places for recreation and beach holidays for local residents and tourists. Venetsianskyi is located between the central district of Pechersk and Rusanivka, and Trukhaniv stretches from the city center to its northern border.

A large part of the Hydropark is located on Venetsianskyi Island, and various bridges are connected to Trukhaniv Island, in particular the Northern and Petrivskyi railway bridges, which are important transport arteries of the city.

The court's decision caused different reactions among the public and environmental organizations. Some welcome it as a step to preserve the city's natural resources, while others express concerns about the possible ecological consequences of the changed use of these areas.
