Plastic ears: a return to harmony

If the shape of your ears or your child’s, plastic surgery can be the solution. Most often, this correction, known as otoplasty, is used to eliminate protrusions. Although experts recommend surgery from four to fourteen years, in practice it is more common in adults.

Otoplasty is becoming more and more available due to the development of medicine. It takes a short time, and the patient recovers quickly from it.

There are several methods of ear surgery. One involves the removal of part of the cartilage, the other involves its alteration and sewing, and the third involves the removal of the skin. In any case, the doctor makes small cuts on the back of the ear, then proceeds to the correction. Then the cuts are sewn.

Prior to surgery, the patient will discuss their expectations and preferences with the doctor. The surgery may take two to three hours, depending on the complexity. Adult patients can be offered surgery under local anesthesia or general anesthesia. Children always undergo surgery under general anesthesia.

After the operation, the patient is advised to stay at home for several days. The head should be kept in bandages for several days or even weeks. Although recovery usually takes place quickly and without complications, problems such as infection or bleeding can sometimes occur.
