Electricity in Ukraine: Debt has reached UAH 15 billion

During the full-scale war, Ukrainians have accumulated a debt of UAH 15 billion for electricity, of which UAH 7.7 billion are debts for 2023 alone.

Yuriy Boyko, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ukraine and member of the Supervisory Board of NPC Ukrenergo, said this in an interview with ExPro.

This huge amount of debt is impressive, and the leaders among the debtors are, not surprisingly, Kyiv and Kyiv region. Dnipro and Kharkiv regions are also among the record holders.

"Is it a lot or a little? In my estimation, it is a very large amount. Among the largest debtors are many regions where they probably should not have been," Boyko said.

He hopes that the lifting of the moratorium on electricity cut-offs for debts and the imposition of penalties on debtors will help reduce debts and encourage Ukrainians to pay for utilities on time.

As a reminder, on January 9, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine lifted the ban on the suspension of housing and utility services, the charging and collection of penalties (fines, fines) and the collection of utility arrears for households in case of non-payment.

According to the resolution, in case of temporary absence of the consumer and other persons in the residential premises for more than 30 calendar days, utility providers must provide an application and documentary evidence in electronic or paper form.

Thus, the norms that were in force before the start of the full-scale war are being restored. At the same time, according to experts and market participants, the majority of the population paid their utility bills in good faith despite the war, and the most problematic were a few household consumers and utility companies.
