  • Slovakia stops military aid to Ukraine: A new turn in international relations

    Опубликовано: 2023-11-15 11:00:21

Slovakia has announced its decision to stop providing military assistance to Ukraine and limit its support to humanitarian aid. Slovak Defense Minister Robert Kalyniak made the announcement during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

Minister Kalyniak emphasized that Slovakia offers Ukraine a wide range of humanitarian, civilian and technical non-lethal assistance, refusing to provide military aid.

Slovakia's decision came after the September 30 parliamentary elections in the country, where Robert Fico's pro-Russian party won. Fico, who opposed support for Ukraine, said that the government had more serious problems than the war in eastern Ukraine.

Fico, after his appointment as prime minister, expressed his disapproval of military aid to Ukraine, arguing that a peaceful settlement was a higher priority than the supply of lethal weapons.

Fico also expressed doubts about the effectiveness of Western sanctions against Russia and threatened to block Ukraine's accession to NATO.

Slovakia has been providing Ukraine with important military supplies, such as Zuzana 2 howitzers and MiG-29 fighter jets. The decision to cut off these supplies poses a new challenge for Ukraine in the face of geopolitical turbulence.
