At the plenary session of the 67th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held on September 28, an important decision was made to include Ukraine in the Board of Governors of this highly prestigious organization for the period 2023-2024, according to the IAEA official website.

The newly elected members of the Board of Governors are Algeria, Armenia, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ecuador, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, Paraguay, Spain, and Ukraine. Together with other members, they will provide effective leadership to the IAEA.

The 35-member IAEA Board of Governors is one of the two most important organs of this international organization, along with the annual General Conference of the IAEA Member States. The Board performs numerous functions, including accepting new members, approving security assurance agreements, publishing safety standards, and appointing the agency's Director General, who is approved by the General Conference.

For the period of 2023-2024, the new 35-member IAEA Board will be as follows: Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Republic of Korea, Namibia, the Netherlands, Qatar, Namibia, Netherlands, Paraguay, Qatar, Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, United States of America, Uruguay and Ukraine.

This event is important for Ukraine, which was previously elected to the IAEA Board of Governors in 2009-2011. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the countries that supported Ukraine in this important issue.

"Ukraine has been elected to the IAEA Board of Governors for 2023-2025. I thank every country that supported our application. Ukraine remains a reliable partner in the nuclear energy sector, and we will make every effort to strengthen the important role of the IAEA and strengthen global nuclear safety," Zelenskyy said.

The President also expressed his belief in the need for joint efforts of all countries to counter nuclear blackmail, in particular from Russia, and emphasized that only through cooperation and joint efforts can nuclear safety be guaranteed for the whole world.
