On the Day of Military Intelligence of Ukraine, which falls on September 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi promoted Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, to the rank of Lieutenant General.
"To assign the military rank of lieutenant general to Major General Budanov Kyrylo Oleksiyovych, Chief of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine," the document says.
It should be noted that in 2020, the parliament reduced the number of senior officer ranks to three: major general, lieutenant general, and general. The rank of general in Ukraine belongs to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi.
It should be added that under the old system, the rank of lieutenant general was colonel general. Despite the fact that this rank was removed from the hierarchy, it is retained for the military who received it before the new law came into force. In particular, the commander of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, is a colonel general.
Before the full-scale invasion, Kyrylo Budanov's identity was little known to the public. The head of the intelligence service mostly worked in the "shadows", as is typical for an intelligence service, especially a military one. However, he is now one of the most well-known speakers who was the first to warn Ukrainians about the impending Russian invasion.
