Transition to electronic archives: Ukraine launches e-Archives pilot project

On August 9, all documents of state bodies in Ukraine began to be digitized and stored in virtual archives through the launch of the e-Archives pilot project. This new initiative is expected to radically change the activities of state archives and simplify access to relevant services for citizens.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine has announced the launch of the project together with the Ministry of Justice and the State Archival Service of Ukraine. From now on, all documents related to the activities of public authorities will be stored in the format of electronic archives.

This step will allow archival information to be stored digitally and integrated into the document management system. Such digital preservation of documents will avoid the risk of losing important information, particularly in the context of a military conflict, when paper documents may be at risk of destruction. This initiative will also facilitate access to archival documents for citizens and organizations.

The electronic archives will eliminate the need to visit state archives in person - now it will be enough to go to a website. The process of searching for and obtaining the necessary information will take place online, without the need to interact with paper documents. A few clicks will allow you to find the necessary documents.

At the first stage of the pilot project, some electronic documents of the Ministry of Justice were added to the archives of the Ministry of Justice and the Central State Audiovisual and Electronic Archive. The next steps include scaling the project to all government agencies and, in the future, other organizations.

The launch of the e-Archive pilot project was made possible through the cooperation of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, the State Archival Service, the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, the European Union's Pravo-Justice project, and other partners.
