EU steps up energy support for Ukraine: integration and financing

The European Commission has presented a new package of energy support for Ukraine, aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security and its full integration into the European energy market. The document was published in Kyiv on 24 February.

According to the plan, by 2027, the Ukrainian electricity market should be fully integrated with the European one, which will allow Ukraine to become part of the European energy system. It also envisages expanding cooperation in the field of gas supply and green energy.

However, in order to take advantage of these opportunities, Ukraine must accelerate reforms in the energy sector and fulfill its obligations to the Energy Community. This includes simplifying regulatory procedures, increasing market transparency and supporting vulnerable consumers.

Key elements of the new support package:

- Integration of energy markets: Ukraine and Moldova should fully join the European electricity supply system. To do this, it is necessary to complete reforms and create mechanisms to protect socially vulnerable categories of consumers.
- Financing gas purchases: The EU will help provide Ukraine with the necessary gas reserves, which will increase the stability of supply not only for Ukraine, but also for the whole of Europe.
- Development of renewable energy: By 2027, Ukraine plans to increase the capacity of "green" energy by 1.5 GW, which will allow increasing the share of renewable energy sources by 25%.

Over the past three years, the European Union has already allocated more than 2 billion euros to support the Ukrainian energy system. The new assistance package will not only contribute to Ukraine's energy independence, but also allow the country to become a full member of the European energy space.
