The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the draft presidential decree, which provides for the removal of the section of the border with Belarus from the exclusion zone. This decision aims to create conditions for the deployment of additional military and border guards in this region.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. Currently, a 50-meter strip along the Ukrainian-Belarusian state border is included in the zone of exclusion and the zone of mandatory resettlement, being owned by the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this step will allow the State Border Service of Ukraine to provide more effective protection and defense of the border with Belarus, as well as control the transformation regime in this area.
The Chernobyl exclusion zone was created in 1986 after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, when the population was evacuated from a 30-kilometer zone around the plant. This area is prohibited for free access due to intense contamination with radionuclides. The zone has an area of 2,576.9 km² and includes the north of Vyshgorod district of Kyiv region, as well as part of Zhytomyr region to the border with Belarus.
The government's plans to remove part of the exclusion zone are due to the need to ensure increased security on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. This will allow more effective control of the situation in the territory directly bordering Belarus and will affect the general state border protection regime.
Thanks to this decision, it is expected to strengthen control over this territory and increase the effectiveness of the protection of the Ukrainian border, which is important in modern security conditions.
