The number of counterfeit hryvnia banknotes decreased in Ukraine

According to the results of 2023, the number of counterfeit hryvnia banknotes in Ukraine decreased. According to the National Bank of Ukraine's monitoring, there were approximately 2.1 counterfeit hryvnia banknotes for every 1 million genuine ones. This is slightly less than in the previous year, when this number was about 2.2 banknotes. Compared to European Union countries, this figure remains relatively low.

According to the NBU, the old-style banknotes are most often counterfeited in Ukraine, especially the 200, 500, and 100 hryvnia notes. The new banknotes introduced in 2015-2020 have improved security features that make them less susceptible to counterfeiting.

In 2023, counterfeit hryvnia notes of the new design accounted for only 18% of the total number of counterfeits, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the new banknote security measures. In addition, it should be noted that the number of counterfeit hryvnias decreased compared to previous years: in 2022, this figure was higher, and even higher in 2021 and 2020.

However, despite the positive trends, the problem of counterfeit hryvnias remains relevant. Criminals continue to look for ways to circumvent the security of the new banknotes. Therefore, the National Bank of Ukraine continues to improve the hryvnia security system to prevent counterfeiting.

To mitigate the risks associated with hryvnia counterfeiting, the NBU recommends that citizens carefully check the banknotes they receive, in particular, pay attention to the security features of the new hryvnia designs. It is also important to contact banking institutions in case of doubts about the authenticity of banknotes.

At the same time, it is important to remember that counterfeit hryvnia banknotes not only damage the country's economy but also violate the law. Therefore, the NBU continues to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to combat counterfeiting and bring those responsible to justice.
