They do not have time to replenish reserves: Analysis of Russian Army Losses in Ukraine by ISW

The Russian army is constantly suffering significant losses along the entire front line in Ukraine and, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), is having difficulty replenishing its reserves.

According to the ISW report, Russian troops lost more than 11,000 people in November at the Kupyansk, Lyman and Bakhmut directions, which indicates the intensity of hostilities and significant losses of the Russian Federation in these areas.

Earlier, Volodymyr Fitio, spokesman for the Land Forces Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, reported these losses and emphasized that the operational tempo of hostilities in these areas remains high, different from the Avdiivka sector.

ISW emphasizes that the reported losses indicate that Russia may suffer even greater losses, particularly near Avdiivka. Earlier, official sources reported 5,000 Russian military casualties during the attempt to capture Avdiivka in October.

Now Russia is continuing massive infantry assaults on Avdiivka to capture this strategically important settlement.

In addition, losses are also being incurred in the defense of the left bank of the Kherson region, where the Ukrainian Armed Forces killed more than 1,200 Russian troops and wounded more than 2,200 in October and November.

Analysts emphasize that Russian losses along the front line are hampering Russia's ability to fully replenish and restore its units in Ukraine, and this could be an obstacle to the formation of new reserves.

ISW admits that the exact losses of the occupiers are unknown, but emphasizes that the Russian army mobilizes 20 to 40 thousand people every month, which may be lower than the rate of losses in Ukraine.

"Russian troops are likely to continue to suffer heavy losses, but they are offset by new recruits as long as Putin can contain the negative domestic consequences," the analysts said.
