Rheinmetall has confirmed its intention to deliver two more advanced Skynex air defense systems to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to an official announcement, these deliveries are scheduled for the second half of 2023, and the necessary ammunition will also be provided along with the systems.
The new Skynex systems will be installed on Rheinmetall HX 8x8 military trucks, which have already been purchased by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the manufacturer, the Skynex system is specifically designed for very short-range air defense operations where guided missiles are not always the most effective solution.
One of the key aspects of using the Skynex system is its ability to work with programmable 35mm Ahead ammunition, which was developed by Rheinmetall specifically for this system. This approach reduces the cost of air defense operations compared to the use of guided missile systems.
It is noted that the ability of Ahead munitions to programmatically engage targets makes them extremely effective, and this approach gives the Skynex system an advantage in the short-range range, where there are limitations to the use of guided missiles.
The developers of the Skynex system emphasize the inaccessibility of 35-mm ammunition to electronic countermeasures. This provides an additional level of safety and reliability in air defense missions.
Rheinmetall's decision to supply two more Skynex systems to Ukraine demonstrates a reliable partnership and assistance in improving the country's defense sector. The Armed Forces of Ukraine will be able to increase their effectiveness and readiness to counter possible threats by receiving these advanced air defense systems.
