  • Half of Ukraine's energy system is damaged: the consequences of Russian shelling

    Опубликовано: 2024-05-03 14:00:45

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, revealed disturbing information, claiming that the Ukrainian energy system has suffered heavy losses due to Russian strikes. According to him, half of the country's energy system was damaged as a result of these attacks.

"Russian missiles have become a real disaster for our energy system. Over the past few weeks, they have been used mainly to destroy our energy infrastructure," he said during an interview with Foreign Policy.

Kuleba emphasized that Ukraine remains stable thanks to the gained experience and understanding of the scale of the threat. However, he emphasized that the situation remains critical.

Russia's attacks on critical infrastructure facilities in four regions of Ukraine led to serious destruction. For example, the Trypil thermal power station in the Kyiv region, which provided electricity to almost 3 million people, was completely destroyed. The losses are 100% of the generating capacity for the company "Centrenergo" and 80% for the energy holding DTEK.

In addition, on March 22, Russia launched the most devastating attack on the Ukrainian energy system in two years. Dozens of missiles and drones damaged electricity distribution and generation facilities across the country.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, expressed concern about the possibility of attacks on the infrastructure of nuclear plants after shelling of thermal power generation. He also emphasized that Russia destroyed almost all of Ukraine's thermal power generation, which poses serious threats to the country. Under these conditions, Ukraine should prepare for any possible scenarios and provide itself with generators in case of need.
