Civil servants will be paid a bonus for English proficiency: new rules

A financial incentive has been introduced in Ukraine for civil servants for their proficiency in English. According to a new government decision, civil servants who confirm their language proficiency level of at least B2 (Upper-Intermediate) will be able to receive a salary bonus.

According to the National Agency of Ukraine for Civil Service, the bonus will be 10% of their official salary. Payments will be made only for the time actually worked and within the budget allocated for the remuneration of state bodies.

To qualify for the bonus, a civil servant must provide an official document confirming the level of English proficiency in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(CEFR). These can be international certificates or internal testing results, if such a procedure is provided for by state bodies.

The government expects that the introduction of the bonus will become an additional incentive for state employees to actively study English and use it in their professional activities. This, in turn, will contribute to better communication with international partners, as well as the integration of Ukraine into the global information space.

It is worth noting that the relevant decision will come into effect simultaneously with the entry into force of Part Six of Article 4 of the Law of Ukraine "On the Use of the English Language in Ukraine" (No. 3760-IX). The introduction of the allowance is envisaged for four years.

Thus, the government not only emphasizes the importance of the English language for public administration, but also actually encourages civil servants to improve their skills and professional development in the context of European integration.
