Ukraine is considering the possibility of significant imports of US natural gas through terminals in Germany, Greece, Lithuania and Poland. This decision is aimed at strengthening the country's energy security in the face of Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.
According to Reuters, such a step will not only allow Ukraine to ensure stable gas supplies, but will also contribute to expanding economic cooperation with the United States. In addition, the creation of a strategic reserve in Ukrainian gas storage facilities will be an additional deterrent for Russia.
The head of the "GTS Operator of Ukraine" Dmytro Lippa said in an interview with Reuters that between April and October, Ukraine plans to import at least 4 billion cubic meters of gas. Part of these volumes will consist of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which will be supplied to European terminals, after which it will be transported to Ukraine.
According to experts, the cost of these imports will exceed $ 1 billion. According to forecasts, a significant part of LNG can be supplied from the United States, which will further strengthen the Ukrainian-American energy partnership.
Traditionally, Ukraine begins to accumulate gas in storage facilities after the end of the winter period, when the temperature rises and energy consumption decreases. Thus, in preparation for the 2025-2026 heating season, the Ukrainian side plans to fill the storage facilities with at least 13 billion cubic meters of gas by mid-October.
Thus, the use of European terminals to import American gas will allow Ukraine not only to guarantee the stability of supply, but also to strengthen energy independence, which is critically important in today's geopolitical conditions.
