  • Why Germany is holding up a new €3 billion aid package for Ukraine

    Опубликовано: 2025-01-13 15:00:36

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is currently blocking the approval of a new €3 billion military aid package for Ukraine. The initiative, which would have made a significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s defenses, has met with resistance from the Chancellor, who fears it would “put the future federal government before a fact.”

What does the new aid package entail?

The aid plan, announced during the 25th meeting of the Contact Group on Defense Issues for Ukraine in the Ramstein format, includes three Iris-T anti-aircraft systems with ammunition, additional Patriot missiles, ten wheeled howitzers and artillery ammunition. The package was initiated by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock a few weeks ago in response to the difficult situation on the front.

    Why is the package blocked?

Despite the justification for the need for urgent action, Scholz's office, according to T-online.de, opposes the adoption of the package. The Chancellor believes that there are currently no urgent reasons for such a large-scale decision that will affect the future government.

Scholz's position is also related to concerns about a change in US policy after the possible return of Donald Trump to power. Such uncertainty is forcing Germany to reconsider its roles and obligations in supporting Ukraine.

The European Union at a crossroads

During the meeting in Ramstein, EU representatives, including High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kallas, emphasized the EU's readiness to take a leading role in supporting Ukraine if the United States reduces its activity. Germany, which ranks second among military aid donors, could lead this coalition, but blocking the package calls into question its ability to become a leader.

    Possible consequences

Sholz’s decision has a significant impact on Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the international coalition of support. Germany, which previously actively contributed to strengthening the Ukrainian army, now risks losing its role as a key partner for Kyiv.

The uncertainty over the new aid package creates challenges for Ukraine, which depends on the rapid receipt of modern weapons. The situation remains tense, and postponing the decision could have serious consequences for both Ukraine’s defense capabilities and the international community’s trust in Germany.
