  • A station for sorting and processing construction waste will be opened in Mykolaiv with the support of UNDP

On the initiative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), a specialized station for sorting and processing construction waste will be opened in Mykolaiv. Such a project is aimed at combating the consequences of the destruction caused to the city during the war. This was reported by Shoko Noda, assistant to the UN Secretary General and director of the UNDP Crisis Office, in her interview with the Interfax-Ukraine agency.

According to Noda, Mykolaiv was seriously affected by the hostilities, as a result of which more than 1,800 buildings, including schools, universities and other important infrastructure facilities, were damaged or completely destroyed. One of the biggest losses was Mykolaiv National University named after Sukhomlynskyi, where about 28,000 cubic meters of construction waste remained - enough to fill 11 Olympic swimming pools.

In view of such scale of destruction, UNDP took the initiative to create a garbage processing station in Mykolaiv. This infrastructure is designed not only to solve the problem of large amounts of waste, but also to help the city cope with the environmental and social challenges caused by the war.

To date, UNDP has already made a significant contribution to the recovery of the affected regions. As Shoko Noda reported, the organization helped clean up about 245,000 cubic meters of garbage throughout Ukraine. This volume can be compared with the filling of about 100 Olympic swimming pools. In addition, the organization handed over 64 units of heavy machinery for clearing debris to various communities, including 41 units to rescue services in the Kherson region.

Noda also noted that the experience of similar projects has already been successfully implemented in other affected regions, in particular in Buchi, where a waste processing station was previously created with the support of UNDP. This gives hope that the new initiative in Mykolaiv will be another important step towards the recovery of the country.

In addition to UNDP, the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also participates in the construction waste processing project in Mykolaiv. This cooperation opens up additional opportunities for the reconstruction of the city and the efficient processing of waste generated as a result of shelling.
