  • Vitamin Deficiency: What you need to know

    All vitamins, except vitamin D, the body cannot synthesize on its own, and gets them only with food. It is therefore important that the diet be rich in vitamins, otherwise vitamin deficiency may develop - a condition that leads to various diseases.

    What is vitamin deficiency?
    Vitamin deficiency is a disease caused by chronic or long-term vitamin deficiency. This condition can be the result of improper nutrition or digestive disorders that prevent the body from absorbing vitamins from food. Vitamin deficiency is most common due to insufficient intake of vitamin-rich foods, especially vegetables and fruits, which often occurs in winter. Vitamin deficiency can also be caused by metabolic disorders, which are especially dangerous for young children and the elderly.

    Effects of vitamin deficiency
    Vitamin A: Lack of dairy products can lead to vitamin A deficiency, which manifests itself in dry skin and hair, brittle nails. The more serious consequences are night blindness and increased risk of developing cancer due to a shortage of beta carotene.
    Vitamins Group B: Deficiency of vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6 causes skin problems, digestion and can lead to convulsions. Vitamin B12 deficiency, more often in severe vegetarians and the elderly, leads to anaemia and damage to the nervous system.
    Vitamin C: Vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, a disease characterized by bleeding and inflammation of the gums and tooth decay. To avoid this, it is necessary to consume at least 40 mg of vitamin C per day.
    Vitamin D: This vitamin is synthesized by ultraviolet exposure, so its deficiency is rare. Vitamin D deficiency leads to osteoporosis in adults and rickets in children.
    Vitamin E: Vitamin E deficiency is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, as it can cause premature labor and birth defects in newborns.
