The United States and the United Kingdom sign a historic agreement on artificial intelligence

The United States and the United Kingdom have signed a historic agreement on artificial intelligence (AI), becoming the first countries to officially cooperate in testing and assessing the risks associated with new AI models, the Financial Times reports.

The agreement signed by UK Science Minister Michelle Donelan and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo defines a way to combine technical knowledge, information, and talents in the field of AI security between the two governments.

According to the newspaper, this agreement is the first bilateral agreement on AI security in the world, which became possible in the context of the growing interest of governments in strengthening the regulation of risks arising from the use of new technologies.

Michelle Donelan, in an interview with the Financial Times, noted that it is necessary to act quickly, as a new generation of AI models will soon appear that can change the rules of the game, and all their capabilities are not yet known.

The agreement will allow the UK's AI Security Institute (AISI), established in November, and its US counterpart to share expertise by sending researchers from both countries and work together to independently assess private AI models.

The partnership between the US and the UK in the field of AI security is modeled after the cooperation between the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) and the US National Security Agency.

Michelle Donelan emphasized that this partnership reflects the leadership of both countries in the field of AI security, especially given that many of the leading AI companies are based in the United States.
