  • Financial assistance to Ukraine: The US Congress is considering splitting the issues

    Опубликовано: 2024-02-02 09:30:14

Mike Johnson, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, announced the possibility of separating the national security funding program, which includes assistance to Ukraine, and border policy issues. According to The Hill, this decision could lead to a separate vote on financial aid to Ukraine.

Johnson conveyed this information to the leaders of the Baltic parliaments, saying that the decision would depend on the text of the agreement on strengthening the border with Mexico, which is being considered by the US Senate.

Currently, the US is discussing immigration policy reforms included in a $110 billion bill that includes aid to Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan, and border protection.

Johnson's spokesman, Raj Shah, said that these comments were made "in a hypothetical context," but Estonian Parliament Speaker Lauri Hussar confirmed the readiness to cooperate and find solutions to further assist Ukraine.

In October, US President Joe Biden submitted a request to Congress for $106 billion in funding, including assistance to Ukraine and border security. The draft also includes immigration policy reform.

President Biden has proposed to allocate $61.4 billion to Ukraine, including military equipment, economic and security assistance, and support for refugees in the United States. Along with other countries, including Israel and Taiwan, Ukraine is awaiting a decision on financial assistance from the US Congress.
