The European Parliament has taken the initiative to deprive Hungary of its right to vote in the Council of the European Union and has collected the necessary number of signatures to support the petition. This was announced by Finnish MEP Petri Sarvamaa.
"The signatures have been collected! We are one step closer to depriving Orban of his right to vote. The feedback has been overwhelming, thank you to everyone who supported this historic petition. I collected 120 names from different parties and several member states," he said.
The parliament now faces the task of assessing the general support for the petition at a plenary session. Sarvamaa indicated that this is possible as early as next week, when a vote on the resolution on Hungary is scheduled.
According to him, there is a high probability that Article 7.2 of the EU Treaty will be included in the resolution. This article provides for the possibility of suspending certain rights, including voting in the EU Council, in case of systematic violation of EU values. The content of the resolution is currently under discussion.
