  • Polish National Election Commission announces election results

    Опубликовано: 2023-10-18 09:30:46

After the parliamentary elections in Poland, it became known that the ruling Law and Justice party remains the leader in the vote, but it does not have enough votes to form a government on its own. The new government will be formed by the opposition under the leadership of former Prime Minister Donald Tusk. This change in the political landscape in Poland could have important implications for relations between Ukraine and Poland.

Poland's National Election Commission has announced the election results, and here are the main voting figures:

The Law and Justice (PiS) party, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Mateusz Morawiecki, received 35.43% of the vote.

The liberal opposition Civic Platform (KO), with well-known former Prime Minister and former President of the European Council Donald Tusk, received 30.66% of the vote.

The Third Way coalition of center-left parties received 14.41% of the vote.

The political alliance of left-wing parties, Lewica, received 8.60% of the vote.

The Confederation, an alliance of far-right Eurosceptic forces, received 7.16% of the vote.

The turnout in the Sejm elections was 74.37%.

Now the Civic Coalition, Third Way, and Law and Justice have the opportunity to unite to form a new government. It follows that the opposition, led by Donald Tusk, will have the opportunity to govern the country.

The previous ruling Law and Justice bloc won the majority of votes in the elections, but did not gain a majority in parliament, so the liberal opposition will have the right to form a new government. This could lead to important changes in Poland's policy and its relations with neighboring Ukraine.

Given the new political context in Poland, it is expected that relations between Ukraine and Poland could improve. Former Prime Minister Donald Tusk has a reputation as a pro-European leader and may make efforts to improve cooperation between the two countries. In the past, the ruling Law and Justice party has made decisions that have significantly affected relations between Ukraine and Poland, including restricting imports of Ukrainian wheat and making harsh statements about Ukraine and its leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

It is also important to keep in mind that the president of Poland until 2025 is a representative of the ruling Law and Justice party, Andrzej Duda. He has the right to veto laws passed by the Sejm, and this may create additional challenges for the opposition in implementing its program.

In this regard, Ukraine should prepare for a new stage in the development of relations with Poland and defend its national interests in important issues such as trade and security. Negotiations between the opposition and President Duda, as well as internal political processes in Poland, should be closely watched and analyzed to understand possible changes in relations between Ukraine and Poland under the new government.
