  • Zelensky: Elections in Ukraine during war are possible only with financial support from the EU and the US

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his readiness to support the idea of holding presidential elections in 2024 on schedule, but he understands that this is unlikely due to the difficult conditions of martial law.

In a special interview with journalist Natalia Moseychuk, Zelensky noted that organizing elections during hostilities is a difficult task and contradicts current legislation.

The President of Ukraine emphasized that he did not want citizens to believe that the authorities were holding on to their positions and not holding elections. Zelenskyy noted that elections require funding and called on the European Union and the United States to provide financial support for the electoral process and send their observers to the frontline.

"I will not hold elections on credit and I will not take money from the armed forces to finance the elections. This is provided for by law," Zelensky said.

In this way, Zelensky responded to a statement by U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who suggested that elections in Ukraine should be held even during the war. Zelensky emphasized that he wants the elections in Ukraine to be free and fair, even in the face of an attack on the country.

Earlier, the Servant of the People also said that as long as the war on the territory of Ukraine continues, the country will not hold elections, including parliamentary elections.
