The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has conducted a thorough audit of approximately 40 military units and found violations in the payment of additional remuneration in the form of "combat" bonuses worth more than UAH 123 million to individuals who had nothing to do with the fighting and did not perform combat missions.
This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Defense.
The audit found that the current rules give commanders of military units too much freedom to interpret the terms "combat operations" and "combat (special) mission", which allows them to pay additional remuneration at their own discretion.
During the audit, a case was found where servicemen of a pontoon and bridge company performing tasks in Kyiv region were paid additional remuneration of UAH 100,000 per month.
"This practice of paying additional remuneration to people who were not under direct fire or did not provide support during the hostilities is unfair. We are uncovering such manipulations and taking the necessary steps to eliminate them," emphasized Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Yuriy Dzhyhyr.
The Ministry of Defense also indicated that they are in dialogue with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to establish procedures that will ensure that only those who actually perform combat missions and participate in combat operations receive additional remuneration.
