  • Canada prepares for new era: Mark Carney promises billions in defense, economy to protect against Trump pressure

Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader Mark Carney has unveiled an ambitious election plan centered on a significant increase in the defense budget, countering threats from the Donald Trump administration, and strengthening the country's economy. His initiatives have already caused a resonance both inside and outside Canada.

In a statement quoted by Politico, Carney warned of the need to prepare for "the danger from the United States," which, according to him, threatens Canadian sovereignty. "President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. But that will not happen. Canada is not America, and it never will be," he stressed.

A key element of Carney's program is a promise to invest 30.9 billion Canadian dollars in defense over the next four years. Thus, Canada will reach NATO's defense spending target of 2% of GDP ahead of schedule by 2030, instead of the previously planned 2032.

Half of these funds will be directed to the modernization of the armed forces: the purchase of new submarines, icebreakers, as well as drones for air and maritime monitoring. The government promises to pay special attention to the protection of the northern regions of the country, in particular the Arctic, where the growing activity of Russia and China is being recorded. Part of the budget will also go to strengthening the presence in areas where indigenous peoples live.

In addition to defense, the Liberal Party is putting forward a program of economic opposition to Trump. Carney called the current US policy an "unjustified trade war" that is hitting Canadian jobs and businesses. As an alternative, the Liberals propose creating the most competitive economy among the G7 countries, in particular by eliminating internal trade barriers between the provinces.

Special emphasis is also placed on supporting agriculture and the development of automotive production in Ontario. Another strategy will be to expand Canada's trade relations with countries in Europe and Asia - in order to reduce dependence on the American market.

Carney's program signals a tougher and more independent position for Canada in world politics. His course is clearly aimed at resisting pressure from the United States and strengthening both the country's security and its economic self-sufficiency.
