Where cars are stolen the most and least in Ukraine

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the number of car thefts in 2023 is striking in its dynamics, returning to pre-war levels. After a record spike in thefts in the first year of the full-scale invasion, almost as many car thefts were recorded as before the war. These data indicate that the situation has stabilized, although some regions remain particularly vulnerable.

According to Opendatabot, 1278 car thefts were recorded in Ukraine in 2023. This is almost 90% less than in the previous year, when a record number of car thefts were recorded - 12,448 cars. Compared to 2021, when this figure was 1148 stolen cars, there has been a significant decrease in this type of crime.

According to Opendatabot statistics, half of the car thefts in 2023 occurred in three frontline regions. Donetsk region, with 375 car thefts, is noted as the leader in this ranking, followed by Kherson region with 178 cases and Dnipro region with 168 car thefts.

Interestingly, before the outbreak of full-scale war, Kyiv was the city with the highest number of car thefts - 34% of all car thefts in 2021. Now the capital is not on the anti-top list, but it remains one of the potential hotspots.

According to analytics, in 2023, the lowest number of car thefts was recorded in Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, where only 4 cases of car thefts were registered per region. This indicates successful security and preventive measures in these regions.
