  • Moldova to begin transition to European railway gauge with EU support

    Опубликовано: 2026-05-14 16:00:17

Moldova is preparing for a large-scale modernization of its railway infrastructure with the transition to the European standard gauge. The construction of the first section of the Euro-gauge on the Ungheni-Chisinau route is scheduled for 2027. The project is being implemented with the support of the European Union and provides for a comprehensive upgrade of the country's transport system.

This is reported by Railinsider. The initiative plans not only to build a new railway line, but also to electrify it, as well as launch high-speed train traffic.

This involves transitioning to the European gauge of 1435 mm, which meets the standards of the EU railway system. The project will begin after the completion of the feasibility study, which should determine the final parameters and efficiency of construction.

After the modernization, electric traction is planned to be introduced on certain sections, which will allow trains to reach speeds in the range of 140 to 160 km/h. This should significantly reduce travel times and increase the efficiency of passenger and freight transport.

According to estimates, the full electrification of the railway network requires significant investments, but is economically feasible in the long term. Moldova is currently negotiating with the European Union to finance the project, the total cost of which is estimated at 340-350 million euros.

The country's Deputy Prime Minister noted that the new Ungheni-Iași line, built according to European standards, will be the first fully electrified section in the country. It should demonstrate the advantages of modern energy-efficient railway transport for the entire transport system of Moldova.

The project is planned to be implemented in close cooperation with Romania. In parallel, the Romanian side is modernizing its railway routes, in particular the Iași-Bucharest routes and other key transport corridors leading to European hubs.

It is expected that such infrastructure integration will allow Chisinau to obtain a modern direct rail connection with major cities and capitals of the European Union, significantly increasing the mobility of passengers and freight flows.
