  • Poland and EU sign deal to unlock concessional financing for country’s defense sector

Poland and the European Union have signed an agreement to unlock concessional financing for the country’s defense sector. The loans amount to 43.7 billion euros (approximately $51.4 billion), which will be used to strengthen defense capabilities and develop the national military industry.

This is reported by Bloomberg. The agreement opens up the opportunity for Poland to conclude a record number of contracts with its own arms manufacturers and significantly strengthen the country’s military potential against the backdrop of growing security challenges in Europe.

During the signing ceremony in Warsaw on May 8, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that these investments will make Poland significantly safer. He also emphasized that the bulk of the financing will be directed directly to Polish defense enterprises.

The Polish Ministry of Defense plans to conclude about 40 new contracts for the supply of military equipment this month. This will be one of the largest defense procurement packages in recent years.

The financing covers a wide range of areas. In particular, the funds will be used to purchase armored vehicles, aircraft, unmanned systems, as well as to develop technologies in the field of cybersecurity. A special emphasis is placed on the modernization of the digital infrastructure of the defense sector.

Leading Polish defense companies, including PGZ SA and WB Electronics, will benefit significantly from the program. It is expected that their production capacities will increase significantly thanks to new state orders.

Poland has become the largest recipient of funds under the European Security Action for Europe program, providing almost a third of the EU's total fund. In addition, the use of soft loans will allow the country to save on interest costs, since the terms of EU financing are more favorable than domestic borrowing, which will reduce the burden on the state budget.
