  • Antibodies Capable of Stopping Bleeding Discovered

    Опубликовано: 2026-05-08 08:48:04

American biologists from the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation have made an important discovery: they have identified antibodies that can reduce blood loss from trauma and internal injuries. The researchers explain that excessive bleeding and poor clotting are caused by a protein called histone, which is released into the bloodstream when cells are damaged.

Histone is normally found in cell nuclei and is involved in DNA packaging, but when released into the bloodstream, it begins to destroy the walls of blood vessels, which can lead to uncontrolled bleeding and fluid accumulation in tissues. This mechanism became the focus of study for scientists seeking a way to block the protein's harmful effects.

The researchers were able to isolate specific antibodies that neutralize the toxic effects of histones. In experiments on laboratory mice with sepsis, the use of these antibodies effectively halted vascular destruction and prevented severe blood loss. Similar processes have been confirmed in primates and human blood tests, raising hopes for future medical applications.

Of particular interest to scientists is the fact that people with autoimmune diseases already produce similar antibodies. This supports the hypothesis that the body is capable of creating natural defenses against injury and infection. The production of antibodies during evolution may have served as a means of protecting against deadly diseases in ancient times.

In addition to laboratory models, the antibodies have demonstrated high efficacy in sepsis—they not only block the destructive action of histones but also reduce the risk of bleeding complications. This discovery opens the way for the development of new drugs for emergency medicine, particularly in trauma, surgery, and severe infections.

Scientists are planning human trials of the method soon to confirm its safety and efficacy. The researchers believe these antibodies could represent a real breakthrough in the treatment of bleeding, potentially saving lives in cases of serious injury and infectious diseases.
