The Ukrainian labor market is showing increasing openness to workers aged 50+, but employers are still trying to find a balance between the advantages of the experience of such candidates and possible professional limitations. This is stated in the study “The Labor Market After 50”, which was published and transmitted by the Ukrinform agency.
According to the results, most employers in Ukraine are generally ready to consider older candidates. At the same time, the business approach to such employees is pragmatic: the decision to hire often depends not on age, but on a specific position and functional tasks.
The study showed that employees aged 50+ are usually associated with experience, responsibility and stability by employers. At the same time, businesses also take into account the potential difficulties associated with adapting to the rapid changes in the modern labor market.
Researcher Maria Krymova notes that among the key positive characteristics of older workers, employers most often highlight reliability, discipline, and stability in the performance of duties. The loyalty of such employees is especially emphasized, as well as their experience and deep knowledge of specific processes in narrow professional areas.
At the same time, employers call one of the main challenges for employing people 50+ the ability to learn. Only 3% of the surveyed businesses highly evaluate this indicator in older workers, while among candidates aged 35–40 this indicator is already 54%.
Another significant problem indicated by employers is the level of digital skills. About 65% of companies noted that insufficient digital competence is one of the barriers to the effective work of employees in the 50+ age category.
Businesses also pay attention to productivity and the ability to work at an intensive pace. Only 3% of employers believe that older workers can consistently maintain a high pace of work, while among younger specialists this figure reaches 52%.
Separately, the study notes that older candidates are often perceived mainly as applicants for technical or labor positions with a lower level of qualification. At the same time, about 65% of surveyed employers stated their general willingness to consider employees 50+, although this often applies to less prestigious or lower-paid positions.
The study is based on interviews with representatives of more than 120 companies representing more than 20 sectors of the economy throughout Ukraine, which allows it to be considered representative for assessing current trends in the labor market.
