Ukraine expands gas cooperation with Poland: import capacity may increase

Ukraine is taking another step towards strengthening energy security and integration with the European gas market. The energy regulator has approved a project that provides for increasing the technical capacity to import natural gas from Poland.

The relevant decision was made by the National Commission for State Regulation in the Energy and Utilities Sectors. Information about this was published on the regulator’s official website, confirming Ukraine’s intention to expand access to alternative sources of gas supply.

The initiator of the changes was the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine, which proposed to increase the throughput capacity at the entry point of the interstate gas connection with Poland. The implementation of this project will allow to significantly increase the volume of imports of blue fuel from the European Union countries.

It is expected that such a decision will have a positive impact on the energy sustainability of the state. In particular, expanding import opportunities from Poland will help reduce dependence on potentially risky supply routes and increase the reliability of energy supply in wartime conditions.

In addition, the initiative is of strategic importance for Ukraine's integration into the European gas market. Strengthening cooperation with EU countries allows for the formation of a more flexible and diversified energy supply model that meets modern challenges.

The allocation of additional capacities will be carried out according to established rules in accordance with the levels of offers. The key stage will be the holding of a joint annual auction on July 6, 2026, during which the demand for new gas transportation volumes will be determined.

If the auction results confirm sufficient market interest and the economic test shows the feasibility of the project, Ukraine and Poland will proceed to a practical increase in capacities. This will mean a real expansion of opportunities for gas imports.

It is important that a similar decision to approve the project was made by the Polish regulator, which indicates the coordination of actions of both parties. Such synchronization emphasizes the strategic nature of the energy partnership between the countries.

The next step will be the publication of the project details and the conditions for access to new capacities. The operator of the gas transportation system of Ukraine should place the relevant information on its official website so that market participants can familiarize themselves with the new opportunities.
