  • A mother's heavy drinking lifestyle reduces her sons' fertility

Recent research by Danish scientists has shown that women's alcohol consumption during pregnancy can significantly impact the fertility of future sons. Doctors from Aarhus University Hospital analyzed sperm samples from nearly 350 young men aged 18 to 21 to determine how maternal prenatal habits affect the reproductive system of their offspring.

The volunteers were divided into four groups based on how much alcohol their mothers consumed during pregnancy. The calculation was based on a single serving of alcohol equivalent to a glass of beer, a small glass of wine, or a shot of spirits. The first group included sons of completely abstinent mothers, the second included those whose mothers drank no more than one and a half units per week, the third included those whose mothers drank two to four units per week, and the fourth included those whose mothers drank more than four units per week.

The results were impressive. Men whose mothers drank more than four drinks a week had sperm counts that were one-third lower than those of abstainers. The average sperm count was 25 million per milliliter, compared to 40 million in the control group, significantly reducing the chances of successful fertilization.

Scientists note that a mother's influence on the development of a child's reproductive system may be even stronger than a man's own habits in adulthood. It has previously been shown that maternal obesity and smoking during pregnancy also reduce sperm count in sons, but alcohol, according to experts, has the most significant effect.

According to experts, the key factor here is the effect alcohol has on the development of the cells of future offspring in the womb. Alcohol can disrupt hormonal balance and slow down natural developmental processes, which affects sperm quality in older men.

The experts' conclusion is clear: a mother's health and lifestyle during pregnancy directly impact the reproductive future of her sons. Eliminating alcohol from the diet during this period becomes one of the most important measures for preventing male infertility, the researchers emphasize.
