  • The Impact of the Sun on Vision and Health

    Опубликовано: 2026-04-12 15:28:41

The health risks of sun exposure are increasingly being discussed in many countries. Scientists and doctors warn that excessive sun exposure negatively impacts not only the skin but also the eyes. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation can lead to serious vision problems.

UV rays reflect off water, sand, asphalt, and the walls of buildings, maintaining their potency. Even in the shade, a person is exposed to them. Ophthalmologist Professor Mark Melson notes that such reflected radiation can gradually accumulate, causing long-term vision problems.

One dangerous effect is photokeratitis—a corneal burn that causes pain and temporary vision impairment. More serious conditions, such as pterygium and pinguecula, are also associated with chronic sun exposure and can lead to a decline in visual acuity with age.

Melson emphasizes that focusing on skin protection from the sun shouldn't distract from eye care. Sunglasses and hats are essential preventative measures, especially for children, whose eyes are particularly sensitive to ultraviolet radiation.

When choosing sunglasses, it's important to ensure they block both UVA and UVB rays. Only then can you effectively protect your eyes from the long-term harmful effects of the sun.

Regular use of sunscreen for your skin and eyes, careful attention to sun exposure, and proper selection of accessories help minimize the risk of developing diseases and maintain long-term health.
