Kyiv is preparing to change fares: the authorities explained the reasons

The capital of Ukraine plans to revise the cost of public transport. The corresponding decision is being considered by the Kyiv City State Administration, which is associated with the increase in costs for maintaining the transport system.

Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko announced the possible changes. According to him, the current tariffs remain the lowest among Ukrainian cities and have not been revised since 2018, which creates significant financial pressure on the city budget.

The mayor emphasized that in recent years, costs for fuel, electricity, logistics and other components of transport have increased significantly. These factors are forcing the city authorities to gradually bring the cost of travel closer to an economically justified level.

A separate role in this process is played by the need to ensure the energy sustainability of the capital. In this regard, the Kyiv City Council is forced to review budget priorities and redistribute funds between different areas.

Currently, Kyiv's public transport is unprofitable and is largely subsidized from the city budget. In 2026, about UAH 12 billion is planned for its support, which is a significant burden on the capital's finances.

An additional problem, according to Klitschko, remains the lack of full compensation from the state for the transportation of privileged categories of citizens. Every year, the city is forced to cover these costs independently, which amount to hundreds of millions of hryvnias.

The head of the capital emphasized that reducing the volume of subsidies for transport will free up resources for other critically important areas. In particular, part of the funds are planned to be directed to preparing Kyiv for the next heating season, which is one of the key tasks in the context of energy challenges.
