Ukrzaliznytsia expands substation protection program: government allocates additional funds

Ukrzaliznytsia continues systematic work to strengthen critical infrastructure protection, which began in 2022. As part of the state policy of increasing the resilience of the transport system, the government has allocated additional funding for the implementation of the next stage of this project.

As reported by the company, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has allocated another 528.5 million hryvnias to strengthen the railway's energy facilities. This primarily concerns traction substations, which are key elements in ensuring the uninterrupted movement of both passenger and freight trains.

The company emphasizes that the stability of the railway network directly depends on the reliability of the power supply. That is why the protection of substations has become one of the priority areas of infrastructure security in the face of growing threats.

The active phase of construction of reinforced protective structures began in 2025. This was a response to the intensification of attacks by the enemy, which significantly increased both the intensity and accuracy of strikes on transport infrastructure facilities.

Earlier, at the initiative of the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, more than 800 million hryvnias were allocated for the implementation of the first stage of construction. Thanks to this, it was possible to quickly deploy large-scale work to protect traction substations throughout Ukraine.

Dozens of specialized teams — builders and power engineers — were involved in the implementation of the tasks, working continuously 24/7. The company notes that most of the first stage facilities have already been erected in the shortest possible time.

Currently, as part of the implementation of resilience plans, the state is financing the next stage — the construction of the second stage of protective structures. Preparatory work will start immediately, and the main task remains the rapid construction of new fortifications in compliance with all technical requirements.

In general, the project is part of a broader strategy to ensure the resilience of Ukrzaliznytsia. It involves not only physical protection of facilities, but also the creation of reserves and mechanisms for rapid restoration of infrastructure in case of damage.

The implementation of this strategy is taking place in close cooperation with the government, in particular the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories, as well as with the support of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine. The company emphasizes that due to the constant change of challenges, all plans are regularly reviewed and adapted to new conditions.
